Skirts in Progress

Hey guys!  I feel like it’s been ages since I’ve last made a blog post, but really… it’s only been since Friday.  How times flies.

Baxter has been feeling a bit under the weather lately, and she’s seen the vet twice since Friday.  She seems to be on the mend, but it’s hard to say since it’s slow going, plus she’s an old lady bun.

Baxter likes to hide out in her cottage, on the second floor.  It’s cute, but this is a tell-tale sign to me that she’s not feeling the greatest.  She goes in here when she’s feeling vulnerable; when looking for extra safety.  (I caught her on floor one this evening which was a nice change of pace.)

What’s nice is that I’m able to keep a close eye on her as I’m never more than 10 feet away from her while I’m sewing.  I’m so glad I can check in on her with so little effort.  (While I’m at home that is, 9-5 she’s on her own with Prof. Quincy.)

Getting to the topic of my post: Skirts, skirts and more skirts.

After finishing up one of my really old projects last week, the Macaron Redux dress, I’ve attempted to stick to my (soft) plan of only working on projects that I started in the past.  ie: finishing up things I’ve already started that are sitting around, uncompleted.

Since I needed an easy project to work on after the long, detailed Macaron dress, I decided skirts would be the way to go.

I have my purple wool Dubarry 1884B Skirt nearly completed along with both linen Simplicity 3673 skirts.  It’s a hemming marathon is what it is!

What’s ‘funny’ is that I’ve added a NEW skirt to the mix: Butterick 1056.  Eeeeeep!

Now I know I said I wasn’t going to start any new projects…. but this was different.  heh  Well, it was….

As I’m nearing completion of my green bobble knit jumper, I realized I had nothing to pair with it besides a black wool pencil skirt.  Since that isn’t terribly fun, I decided I had to make a skirt to pair along with my jumper.

To show you proof, here’s how close I am to wearing in green bobble jumper:

So you can see, I really needed something asap.  :)

Even though I started a new project when I wasn’t technically supposed to, I at least shopped my own personal stash for the fabric.  This is a brown tweedish (scratchy) wool that I had used for my Thurlow Trousers (which were a bust).  While I didn’t have enough fabric left to remake the Thurlows, I did have just enough for the Butterick 1056 skirt.

So far, this skirt has been a pure pleasure to sew, I’m actually having fun again. heh  The Macaron dress was great and it was a wonderful achievement, but I can’t say it was fun during that last week.  (It was stressful and had lots of tedious hand stitching).  So stitching up this fun, 40’s style skirt was just the thing I needed!

In fact, I’ve loved sewing it up so much that I want to make a second, summery version.  Perhaps even attempting a whimsical, fun patch pocket different from the one given in the directions.

While I can’t cross these skirts off my list yet… I am super, super close to being done with them.  This has left me pondering a new sewing project like a blouse or if I feel like continuing to plow through all of my WIP’s.

I know I should continue to finish my old projects: says my rational brain.  But my irrational brain is telling me that I deserve a break to make something new and fresh.  Heh  My irrational brain is the one who got me in this mess in the first place isn’t it….

Only time will tell to see which side of my brain wins this next round.  :)
