Stitchcraft Freebie: Bobble Stitch Jumper

Ooooh do I have a great knitting pattern to share with you guys today!!!  This pattern comes once again from the November 1936 Edition of Stitchcraft magazine.

As soon as I saw it I wanted to knit it up for my next vintage knitting project.

Do you guys know what’s funny?!  I actually loathe knitting or crocheting bobbles.  I love the way they look, but I just think they’re tedious and annoying.  But I have to make this sweater anyhow, that’s how much I love it.  :)

I’m nearly finished with my ‘Accessory for your Spring Suit’ jumper, so I’m needing another project to work on really soon.  I was going to knit the Chuck Sweater next that you may have seen on Lladybird Lauren’s blog (which is gorgeous and so cute in red) but I’m thinking I have to do this one first.

I was hoping to use a yarn from my own stash to reduce, but the only appropriate yarns I found were pastel yellow or sky blue, none of which would suit for this winter jumper.  I’m thinking of knitting it in either a pretty red, a cornflower-royal blue hue, or a hunter green.  What do you guys thinks it should be knit in?

I don’t care for the tucked-in sweater look, but I love the action shot here.

Pattern Details:

This pattern is designed to fit a 34-36″ bust and has a tension of 7.5 sts per inch using a US size 5 (or 3.75mm) needle.

Huh.  This is the second time in this Stitchcraft edition that the gauge seems quite different vs. the needle size.  I did a bit of digging and found this site, that lists out some vintage yarns and their gauge with the recommended needle size.  I’ve used this site a bunch of times to reference, and here for the same yarn “Paton’s Beehive Fingering, 4-ply” they use a US size 3 needle (or 3.25mm).  I’m thinking that the booklets from further back (prior to the 50’s and even 40’s) have a different needle size system or something.

That’s all I have for you today.  As always, feel free to drop me a line if you’d like to see a particular type of pattern posted and I’ll see what I can do for you.  Have a lovely weekend everyone.  :)
