My Running Turban

I feel like it’s been ages since I’ve posted up any kind of finished project on the blog.  After finishing this little headband turban about 2 weeks ago, I wanted to make a point of taking some pre-run pictures to share with you all.

I don’t think you guys have seen me (ever!) without my glasses.  Contacts bother my eyes, but I manage to wear them whenever I’m doing exercise of any kind.

I knit this headband-turban up in 2-3 days using a worsted weight yarn.  This would go even speedier if you used a thicker, chunky weight yarn.  My fellow Chicagoan-Blogger-Knitter-Sewer, Gail of Today’s Agenda, knit her lovely version up in 1 day using a Bulky weight yarn.  Did I mention how lovely hers is?!

The yarn I used is a wool-acrylic blend from my local JoAnn’s store.  It’s nothing terribly fancy which is perfect for using this headband as a running accessory.  I can throw it in the washer & drier without any guilt once it gets dirty.  And given how quick it was to knit up, I could always whip another one up if needed.

The pattern I used is a free one that I found on Ravelry called Turban(d).  Those non-Ravelry folks can use this link to grab the free pattern.  This is an easy pattern for all you beginners out there; all you need to know is a knit stitch, purl stitch, and how to slip a stitch.  You don’t even need to work in the round to do it; it’s all done flat and then seamed together at the bottom at the very end.

The only downside to this is that I should have used a 100% wool yarn instead of a blend.  Yes it’s good for the wash, but it’s bad since it’s not as warm as it could be in the cold, windy Chicago weather.  I guess I’ll just have to make another one.  :)

P.S.  I managed to run a fatty 2.5 miles today.  heh  I’m building myself up to running 3 miles which shouldn’t be too bad now that I’ve managed to run this distance.  I’m doing my first race (since forever ago) the first Sunday in November.  So once I get 3 miles down I can start working on improving my pace.  *hip hip*

    High five on getting up to 2.5 miles! I used to run, but my knees can’t really take it any more :-(

      Yay! Be sure to follow the directions exactly, and you should be good.

      Used a worsted weight yarn and had to increase the length a bit on mine, just a forewarning if you’re doing the same. But it would be faster in a chunky yarn. :)

    This is really cool! Just downloaded the pattern and off to start one myself…I live in Norway and its starting to get pretty cold now so it’s just what I need for walking the dog :)

  4. How cute! I don’t run but I do walk to school everyday and it gets quite chilly in the winter so I may need one of these!

      Yes! It’s such a great, quick project. It was the perfect project that keeps me looking semi-retro while I’m decked out in my normal running gear. :)

    This looks great! What a perfect accessory!

    I just did my first 5K in, oh, 12 years, and it really helps to make a great running playlist! Another good trick is to work up to running a bit more than 5K, that way the race goes by quicker than your daily run!

I’ve started using my running as my meditation time – I let my mind wander away from the repetition of my feet to any unfinished thoughts or just the sights I am seeing around me and before I know it I’m at 2.5kms and it’s time to turn around – I’ve always had problems with getting to sleep because my brain zooms around instead of letting me sleep – now it’s almost as if I clear my head with my run, it’s great.

    Thanks for the pattern link – I have been trying to get into knitting (love the Kim Hargreaves patterns I saw in a book at the library) but I think I tried too hard too soon – this looks likes something I could make.
