Stitchcraft Freebie: Bobble Stitch Jumper

For today’s free knitting pattern, I took to my stacks and pulled out a summer pattern for you all.  It comes from the June 1949 edition of Stitchcraft.

Also, here’s a B&W image that shows the stitch pattern a bit better:

Isn’t it lovely?!  The more I look at vintage knitting patterns, the more I’ve been seeing this stitch pattern or a variation of it.  Besides the stitch pattern, I think the sleeves and neckline treatment ‘make’ this jumper.

Doesn’t it remind you of this Simplicity 3445 dress pattern you may have seen made up on The Sew Convert’s blog?  What’s interesting is that the pattern is from the late 50’s or early 60’s while this jumper is from the late 40’s.  This unique sleeve treatment doesn’t seem prevalent, from what styles I’ve seen of the 50’s, but yet it’s remained fashionable for 10+ years.  I personally love this sleeve treatment since you have the breeziness that comes from a sleeveless style but it conceals the very front and back of your arms for modesty or for self-consciousness.

Pattern Details:

This jumper is knit with a fingering weight yarn with a gauge of 9 sts per inch.  Unfortunately, this jumper is only sized for 34-36 ” bust; since this is a more advanced knitting pattern I’m sure it would be able to be sized bigger by adding in an additional pattern stitch repeat or by making the space between the pattern repeats slightly wider.

The moss stitch border on this jumper is knit up separately and is applied at the end.  If I were to make this up, I’d be tempted to pick up stitches and knit the border directly onto the sleeve and neckline.

As always, if you guys want to see a particular type of knitting pattern just send me a shout-out in the comments.  Otherwise… next week’s pattern may or may not be a little knitted bathing suit.  :)
