Fabric Shopping & Nautical Dress Planning

Taking advantage of my extra day off of work, I decided to go fabric shopping.  I tried to shop from my own fabric stash for my next few projects, but nothing was quite right.  So I went out and bought fabric/notions for the next few sew weekly challenges.  I wish I felt guilty for buying fabric when I have fabric at home, but what I bought is too good to feel bad about.  heh

I bought these three fabrics from Vogue Fabrics:

The cranberry pink is a 3-ply silk crepe that I just haaaad to have, the green Shantung is for another you-know-what dress!, and the blue flowered fabric is my first knit fabric purchase for this dress.

I love all of the fabrics I bought, but this one takes the cake!!!

It’s a navy cotton Jacquard with black, gold-metallic, and red ropey stripes.  It’s so thick and lush and ahhhmazing!  I had to buy 6 MEGA yards of this juicy fabric since it was only 45″ wide.  Click here to see the fabric in it’s natural element, designed by Marc Jacobs.

I’m planning on making Butterick 7651 by Saturday/Sunday (wish me luck!!!) for the next sew weekly challenge.

I think it’s really hard to envision… to help myself out I drew a picture, which may or may not help you ‘see’ the dress I’m creating.

There is going to be a ton of stripes-matching to create a chevron pattern all over the dress.  I’m going for a nautical theme so the chevron pattern will help, not to mention the colors and the rope design on the dress.

I’m still unsure about the sleeves.  I was thinking about making 3/4 length semi-fitted sleeves, but I’m not sure.  The fabric is really thick and even if I were to make it sleeveless, it would be too thick to wear in summer-time.  What do you guys think?  3/4 length sleeves, short sleeves, cap sleeves, or sleeveless?

The other thing I’m unsure about is the neckline sashy-thing that ties in the back.  I think it would be too much to have it in the same fabric, but also not sure which color I should use instead.

I only was able to cut out the front panel for the skirt, and it’s currently only basted since I’ve had it hanging on the bias before doing the real stitching.  But this should give you an idea of how it will look.

Please let me know what I should do about the sleeves & the sash color.  I could really use your input before I start cutting the rest of the fabric up.  :)

Happy Belated Easter & Happy Monday!
